Despite losing the 1948 War, Arab nations throughout the Middle East had still refused to recognize Israel’s right to exist. After the Suez Crisis, Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser envisioned creating a unified Arab world, commonly referred to as pan-Arabism. Nasser was the consummate pan-Arab leader in the 1960s, positioning himself as the leader of the Arab world through increasing incitement against Israel with rhetoric. Israel found itself in possession of more land after 1948 than envisioned by the U.N. Partition Plan, but the Green Line still left it less than 10 miles wide in some positions. In the summer of 1967, the armies of Jordan and Syria mobilized near Israel’s borders, while Egypt’s army mobilized in the Sinai Peninsula just west of the Gaza Strip. Combined, the Arab armies numbered over 200,000 soldiers. In early June 1967, the Israelis captured Jordanian intelligence that indicated an invasion was imminent, and on June 5, 1967, the Israel Broadcasting Authority aired an Israeli Defense Force communique. ´´Since the early hours of this morning,” it read, ´´heavy fighting has been taking place on the southern front between Egyptian armored and aerial forces, which moved against Israel, and our forces, which went into action to check them.” Over the next six days, the Israelis overwhelmed the Egyptians in the west, destroying thousands of tanks and capturing the Gaza Strip and the entire Sinai Peninsula. At the same time, Israel drove the Jordanians out of Jerusalem and the West Bank, and it captured the Golan Heights from Syria near the border of Lebanon. In the span of a week, Israel had tripled the size of the lands it controlled. Israel had gone from less than 10 miles wide in some spots to over 200 miles wide from the Sinai Peninsula to the West Bank. Israel also unified Jerusalem. 1. Language: English. Douglas MacArthur is best remembered for his adaptability, a quality which hoisted him to his greatest accomplishments. Adaptability now reigns as the most indispensable trait for high military leadership in this era of technological leaps, which guarantee radical changes in the nature of war during the span of an ordinary career. No American figure better exemplifies this trait than the man who was commissioned before the Wright Brothers´ first flight but became a keen exponent of an entirely new dimension in warfare. MacArthur was also in charge of the U.S. occupation of Japan, the most successful occupation in history. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Weiner. A moving collection of prose and poetry written by veterans of the military. Their stories and poignant, sometimes excruciatingly humorous, personal experiences span history from WWII to the Cold and Vietnam Wars, to the conflicts of the Persian Gulf and Iraqi Freedom, and even to little-known clandestine operations in remote corners of the globe. Written by veterans of every branch of the services, each writer has answered the call to defend and protect human values both great and small. To walk a moment in their shoes is to share in their hopes and fears perhaps even to grasp from the comforts of our homes a better understanding of life itself. Their piquant insights, times of mortal doubt, and their reckless courage inspires wonder, a sometimes uneasy gratitude, but a lasting sense of national worth within each of us. Ultimately, their words serve both as a tribute to what individuals do in the name of our cherished freedoms and as a living testimonial to all those who have stood watch upon the terribly thin line that separates us from the world´s despots. 1. The Zulu are one of the most famous ethnic groups in Africa and possibly one of the most misunderstood. Of course that is due almost entirely to the fact that European colonial powers encountered the powerful group in the 19th century and found that they were more than willing to resist and fight them. At the height of its power in the southern part of Africa, the Zulu could rely on an army of 40,000 warriors, presenting a formidable obstacle to the designs of the British, who eventually engaged in a full-scale conflict with the Zulu due to their own geopolitical concerns. When the fighting started at the beginning of 1879, British military leader Lord Chelmsford assured, ´´´If I am called upon to conduct operations against them, I shall strive to be in a position to show them how hopelessly inferior they are to us in fighting power, altho´ numerically stronger.” Less than 10 days later, Chelmsford had lost nearly 33 percent of his fighting force at the Battle of Isandlwana, but the British began to take the Zulu more seriously and subdued the Zulu nation in the span of five months. The military conflict helped immortalize the Zulu in the minds of Westerners, but their history was far from finished in 1879. The Zulu persevered only to suffer under the depredations of South Africa’s apartheid system, but they also outlasted that, and even today they remain the largest ethnic group in South Africa. In the midst of the fighting and the apartheid system, the actual culture and history of the Zulu have often been overlooked, even as they remain one of the most famous groups in Africa’s history. The World’s Greatest Civilizations: The History and Culture of the Zulu comprehensively covers the history, culture, and legacy of the Zulu from their origins to their influence. 1. Combat veteran and author Hans Halberstadt takes listeners deeper inside the elusive world of snipers than ever before, from recruitment and training to the brutality of the killing fields. Shadow Team is probably the most productive sniper team in American military history, accounting for 276 confirmed kills in a six-month span with no casualties of its own. The team´s leader made what was - and may still be - the longest range kill with a 7.62mm rifle. For the first time ever, team members explain what it´s like to kill a man and what it takes to become one of the elite. The tragic tale of Headhunter Two is altogether different. This four-man sniper team from a regiment known within the Corps as the Magnificent Bastards was killed in 2004 in Ramadi, Iraq. Their deaths not only caused a reevaluation of sniper tactics and techniques but also created a desire for vengeance that was exacted nearly two years later in dramatic fashion. Based on hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews, Halberstadt gets inside the sniper mind and shows how snipers think and interact with each other, how missions are planned and executed, how the weapons work, and even what happens when a bullet finally strikes its target. There are only a few hundred snipers from all the services put together in combat at any one time, making this true inside story a rare and important event. 1. Language: English.
